The best way for a man to woo a woman is to let her do the talking. A new study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has revealed that men can increase their chance of a second date by keeping their mouths shut.

Team members analysed conversations during speed dating sessions. The couples only had a few minutes to get to know each other before deciding whether to meet again after the session. Of the 60 conversations analysed, researchers found that by just making appreciative noises while a woman was talking increased her interest.

One of the deciding factors was the number of times a man acknowledged what the woman said by saying something like“Okay” or “I see”. The short interjections were a key indicator of the likelihood of the woman wanting to see the man again. The researchers were able to make predictions based on this indicator and correctly deduced the outcomes for 80 per cent of the speed date meetings.

The test women were more likely to be attracted to a man who used such phrases 30 times or more during the conversation, rather than those who used them less frequently.

These findings are published in the magazine New Scientist.
